Chancellorsville National Military Park

Hazel Grove

Pictures of Hazel Grove, the natural "artillery park" held by the Union and easily given up to the Confederates.

Hazel Grove, looking towards Fairview Knoll (25K)

Image 1: Hazel Grove, looking towards Fairview Knoll. It is this area that Sickles' men grabbed late on May 2, gave up without a struggle on May 3, and from which the Confederates were able to attack Fairview Knoll with artillery. The picture on the left (enhanced from the photograph) shows Confederate artillery firing on the Union positions. Fairview Knoll can be seen in the distance.

Confederate cannons (37K)

Image 2: Confederate cannons aimed towards Fairview Knoll. In the background, near the trees, is a limber. As can be seen, the area could handle a fair number of artillery pieces.

These photographs were taken with a Nikon F-601 autofocus SLR, using a Nikkor 24mm - 50mm f2.8 wide angle zoom lens. The image was captured on Kodak Gold 200 film.
